1. Professional Qualifications
The investment required in doing any training course is considerable, both in terms of financial investment and in terms of time. So the resulting qualification must be one that is recognised in whichever jurisdiction you may be working in subsequently. Accounting practices, and therefore accounting courses, differ in content between different countries and it is worthwhile taking time to anticipate which country you may work in down the line.
With employment prospects less reliable generally than they were three or four years ago, many people are finding themselves moving to find the right job or because their partner is forced into moving. A portable accounting qualification is valuable.
2. Accounting as a building block
A basic accounting training is a prerequisite for many careers and an advantage for many more. A solid understanding of accounting will underpin any business financial management. The role you subsequently take on may not involve preparing financial accounts for a business, but many financial decisions in the business environment will be made based on the numbers showing in accounts. Now, more than ever, cash flow and comprehension of the impacts of negative cash flow is fundamental to running a business. The insights that a person who has undergone accounting training has when faced with a business’s profit and loss sheets can feed directly in to management decisions.
3. Demand for accountants
Even in an economic downturn, there is demand for accountants. As a career choice, it is a safe bet. The demand has also been seen in Ireland for volunteer accountants. The Chartered Accountants Voluntary Service (CAVA) was established in 2008 in response to the number of queries from small businesses in difficulty in Ireland following the economic collapse. The purpose is to help small businesses who are not in a position to avail of professional services.
4. Your own accounts
Training in accountancy will allow you greater control over your own budget as you go through life. Not everyone needs to have an understanding of how to design a building, this you will leave to your architect. But everyone needs to manage their own fiscal affairs. The tax return that is left to the last minute due to lack of understanding is a common occurrence amongst people who have no facility with accounts. The household budget is a prime example of managing cash flow. Any accounting course will provide fundamentals which can be applied in a personal way through life.
5. Accounting courses are interesting
The image of the accountant is not always the most exciting and it can often be up there with tax inspectors in terms of ‘cool’ careers to choose. But if numbers are your thing, then studying accountancy is going to be a very satisfying experience. For many, an ability to work with figures leads to a very rewarding career and opens up an individual to other careers in business financial management.
With this in mind, when you go to choose from the accounting courses available, choose the one that presents itself with lecturers who have real world experience. These are the people that will motivate you in your chosen profession by bringing real examples to the academic environment. Lecturers and trainers who are themselves interested in the course they are providing will be much easier to follow and to take an interest in. Those that bring enthusiasm to the classroom are definitely recommended.
